What is stabilized wood?
Stabilized wood is a hybrid material made of wood and acrylic resin that ACRYHOLZ has been producing for more than 20 years using a special vacuum-pressure process. Soft wood, mostly from species native to Europe such as poplar or ash, is impregnated with transparent or colored acrylic resin.
The result is a material with many advantages over untreated wood:
- considerably harder and more crack-resistant than untreated wood
- less sensitive to moisture and warps considerably less
- can be worked like hardwood
- every piece one of a kind thanks to its grain and color
Stabilized wood combines the natural character of wood with the advantages of modern materials. This makes it a popular material for knife and tool handles, jewelry and design objects, wherever function and looks come together.
Processing and Applications
The material can be sawn, sanded, milled, turned and polished like hardwood, on a CNC machine as well as by hand. It is mainly used for knife handles, jewelry, design objects, art and sports equipment where looks and durability matter. Colors and Customization
ACRYHOLZ dyes in one color (uni-color), two colors (bi-color), three colors (tri-color) or transparent, so the natural grain stays visible. We adjust the colors on request, from bold and bright to subtle.
Service: Stabilization of Customer Wood
Customers can send in their own wood for stabilization from a volume of around 13 liters. The process takes about 5 working days and includes coloring, resin impregnation and sealing.
