 Stabilized wood is produced by vacuum-impregnating natural wood with acrylic resin. The result is a material that looks and feels like wood but practically no longer swells, cracks, or warps. Coloring options are nearly unlimited, ranging from subtle and translucent to bold two- and three-tone effects.

Micarta is a resin-impregnated linen or paper laminate — extremely stable and grippy, but noticeably more technical-looking than wood. G10 is a fiberglass-reinforced composite with properties similar to Micarta, though it's highly abrasive to machine and requires specialized tooling and consistent respiratory protection.

Untreated natural wood scores points for its pure, natural look, but without further treatment it's prone to moisture damage, cracking, and discoloration — for a daily-use knife, that's rarely a lasting solution. Horn and bone hold a firm place in traditional bladesmithing and knife making, but they require regular maintenance and take experience to machine cleanly.
